# Ala Kachuu – Take and Run earns an Oscar nomination

When we heard that “Ala Kachuu – Take and Run” was nominated for the **Best Live Action Short Film in the Academy Awards**, we could not be more excited. There were 6 live action short films nominated, one of which [premiered](https://cya.live/event/oNA8wGSDFWwadP9xxmyso) on Cya Live. “**Ala Kachuu – Take and Run**” premier edas part of the [La Femme International Film Festival](https://lafemme.org/) hosted here on Cya Live in October 2020.

The [film](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7914938/) follows the story of Sezim, a 19 year old woman who wants to fulfil her dream of studying in the Kyrgyz capital when she gets kidnapped by a group of young men and taken to the hinterland (a remote region from urban areas). She is then forced to marry a stranger and if she refuses the marriage, she is threatened with social stigmatization and exclusion. Torn between her desire for freedom and the constraints of Kyrgyz culture, Sezim desperately seeks for a way out. The drama shows the **desire for freedom versus the clutches of old traditions,** and depicts how making choiced becomes difficult for women in traditional communities.

It may not seem important to be nominated for an Oscar, but when a country has never won one, it is obviously something to celebrate. This nomination for the best live-action short category is a big win for Kyrgystan. This creates hope that this nomination will pave the way for other homegrown talents to be recognized and given that recognition that they deserve. Kyrgyzstan has also [submitted](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kyrgyz_submissions_for_the_Academy_Award_for_Best_International_Feature_Film) over 15 different film titles for the academy awards in the past 20 years none of which, unfortunately, were nominated.
