To mark the tragedy of the 10th year of the Syrian war, Magdalene College, Cambridge University together with Kings College London are hosting a special film screening of an extended 45 minute version of the BBC Panorama Syria’s Schools Under Attack. There will follow a panel discussion and Q&A with the filmmaker Darren Conway. Thousands of schools have been totally or partially destroyed during the Syrian conflict. Iqra School in Aleppo was one of those schools, bombed by a fighter jet in 2013. Some pupils were killed immediately and more died of horrific injuries soon after. A BBC Panorama team were filming in a hospital nearby and captured the desperate attempts to save lives after the attack. Eight years later, Panorama has met with survivors and relatives of the dead to discover how profoundly their lives have changes as a result of that day. Meet the panel Hosted by BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson. Panelists include multi award winning BBC filmmaker Darren Conway, chemical weapons expert Hamish de Bretton Gordon, broadcaster and Magdalene PhD student Dr Saleyha Ahsan and and the early warning life saving HALA security systems co-founder, John Jager. John Simpson is a foreign correspondent and world affairs editor the BBC's world affairs editor of BBC News. He has reported from more than 120 countries, including thirty war zones and has interviewed many world leaders. He is a Magdalene alumni, where he read English.
