Lily: the life & career of a comics pioneer Lily is an intimate portrait of the first female comic book artist and co-creator of iconic characters such as “Señorita Rio”. Lily Renée was an extraordinary woman and formidable presence whose story is almost as heroic as her impact on modern entertainment. Filmmaker Adrienne Gruben brings Lily's story to life with candid interviews and riveting archival footage, chronicling her heroic journey from Nazi-occupied Vienna to New York’s Golden Age of comics. Lily's creative contributions at Fiction House Comics were a foundational influence on American popular culture, and paved the way for generations of women to come. After the screening, director Adrienne Gruben, Producer David Armstrong, and other special guests will discuss the film and answer audience questions. In September 2018, Lily was awarded the Decoration of Honour in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria and was received by the Austrian President and Chancellor. In May 2019, Lily traveled back to Austria for the opening of an exhibit of her artwork at the Jewish Museum of Vienna. She visited her childhood home and the elementary school she attended. Lily also celebrated her 98th birthday in Vienna.The Mayor welcomed her back home. Lily is currently living in the same apartment on the Upper East Side for the past 60 years where she raised her two children.
