Join in this interactive online event on a laptop using the latest version of Google Chrome. This event will feature a screening of the short film Uniontown, a story that weaves together the untold narratives of a long-silenced southern city continuously polluted by industrial waste, including coal ash from TVA’s Kingston Fossil Plant. Driven by the story of Esther Calhoun, a community leader and former president of the Black Belt Citizens Fighting for Health and Justice, the film is an intimate look at the lives of modern day freedom fighters determined to clean up their town and preserve what’s left of their natural resources, all in the midst of a high stakes local election. Following the short film, panelists will share their stories of what happened with the Kingston coal ash - from its “cradle” in Roane County, Tennessee, to its troubled “grave” in Uniontown, Alabama. Panelists include: Julie Bledsoe, a community leader and the wife of a worker harmed during clean-up of the Kingston spill, now standing up with others to demand justice for victims of the disaster; Jean Cheeley, an active member of Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM) who helped prevent the relocation of Kingston’s coal ash to Cumberland Mountain in Tennessee; & Ben Eaton, the President of Black Belt Citizens Fighting for Health and Justice and a County Commission for District 5 in Uniontown, fighting damage from the massive landfill where Kingston coal-ash was eventually dumped.
