THIRD ACTion Film Festival 2020: The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades Screening Start Time: 10:30AM (MST) Squaring Up: This short follows a group of older Calgarians, including a blind woman, Dee, whose passion for square dancing provides them with a sense of community, belonging and pride. The Passage: In 1974, my 20-year-old parents and Uncle Andy built their own canoes, launched them into the Pacific, and became some of the first people in modern history to canoe from Washington to Alaska up the Inside Passage. My brother and I grew up paddling those wooden canoes in the Virginia rivers and the 1974 adventure became legend in our family - shaping who we’ve become, how we view our parents, and how our parents view themselves. In the summer of 2017, we renovated those canoes and with our aging parents completed their 1974 journey. The Passage is a story about the dreams of aging brothers, fathers and sons, and the wild places that define us. Ageless Athlete: Is it possible to be both a geriatric and a peak performance athlete? Guinness World Record holder Martin Parnell is determined to beat all his personal running bests that he set in his 40s and be in the best shape of his life at 62. Sensei Fran Kicks Ass: Sensei Fran Kicks Ass is the story of one woman’s pursuit to redefine what it means to age. Eighty-year-old Fran Vall is a master teacher of two Japanese martial arts, as well as skiing and snowboarding. Chu Bien: Set amidst the emerald waters and soaring limestone islets of coastal Vietnam, Captain “Chu” Bien spends more time in a modest boat at sea than at home. Embodying simplicity—the items he uses daily can be counted on one hand—he confirms that happiness and fulfillment are found in the relationships we forge, not the things we accumulate. Hosted by Rose Bene with Special Guests Salima Stanley-Bhanji, Martin Parnell and Nate Dappen. This screening is sponsored by the Calgary Seniors Resource Society All screenings have subtitles or closed captioning and there will be an ASL interpreter during discussions.
